FREE NATURE HIKE, 10-11:30 a.m. Dec. 9, Driftwood State Fishing Area, 8825 S. U.S. 31, Edinburgh

With winter bearing down, any opportunity to get outside is a welcome one. Local residents can do so in one of Johnson County’s most intriguing natural areas. Ivy Tech Community College organizes these hikes at Driftwood State Fishing Area, a 260-acre property neighboring Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area. The nature hike is open for anyone in the public who is interested. People are asked to meet in the first paved parking area, and to bring binoculars if you have them.

POLAR EXPRESS PARTY AND STORYTIME, 5 and 6 p.m. Dec. 9, Wild Geese Bookshop, 40 E. Madison St., Franklin

Celebrate the season with one of the most endearing and enduring Christmas stories of all time. People are invited to wear their PJs, drink hot chocolate and enjoy an abridged reading of the story. The Polar Express conductor is scheduled to make an appearance, and all ticket-holder will receive a commemorative ornament. Two different sessions will be held, one at 5 p.m. and another at 6. Each attendees must purchase a ticket to attend so that organizers have adequate space and supplies.
