Walter L. Abbott

MORGANTOWN

Walter L. Abbott, age 84 passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, December 7, 2023 at his home in Morgantown.

Walter was born January 13, 1939 in Brown County, to his parents, the late Carl E. and Cora (Collins) Abbott. He attended Helmsburg High School and went on to serve with the Indiana National Guard for 4 years. Walter retired from PenTek in Indianapolis where he worked as a welder. Prior to that, he held the same position for Central State Bridges in Indianapolis. He was also the owner and operator of his own construction company in Morgantown, where he built new homes and completed both remodels and roofing projects around the Morgantown area.

Walter was a current longtime Morgantown Town Board Member. He enjoyed fishing, watching old western movies and caring for stray cats. Walter also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a fan of the Indiana Pacers, NASCAR and the Little League World Series.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary A. (Witt) Abbott, whom he married on August 29, 1958 in Morgantown. He is also survived by his children, Karen A. (Steve) Hickman of Trafalgar, Kathy E. (Brian) Van Winkle of Morgantown and Jeff L. Abbott of Helmsburg; sister, Mary Lou Harris of Illinois; grandchildren, Jackie (Jamie) Owens, Chris (Brandy) Hickman, Brady (Sarah) Van Winkle, Joseph Van Winkle, Rachel (Justin) Gribbins, David James (Felicity) Abbott, Anna Lee Abbott, Ethan Lee James Abbott and Bailey Rossell; and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James “Jim” Abbott; grandson, Colton Lee James Abbott; and a brother, Morris Abbott.

Pastor Brady Van Winkle will conduct a funeral service on Monday, December 11th at 2 p.m. at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation &Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 12 p.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
