Bargersville couple escapes space heater fire

A Bargersville couple and their dogs escaped a house fire Friday morning.

At about 5:25 a.m., a husband and wife and their dogs woke up to a fire in their Eastview Drive home. When firefighters arrived, the couple told them they escaped the smoke and flames by crawling out their bedroom window, according to a news release from Bargersville Community Fire Department.

The homeowner credits their smoke alarm alerting them and allowing them to escape. The homeowner stated he heard the smoke alarm and opened the bedroom door where he encountered thick smoke and high heat conditions, the release says.

No injuries were reported, the department said. The White River Township, Greenwood and Whiteland fire departments assisted.

The home sustained approximately $150,000 in damage from smoke and flame, the fire department estimates.

The cause of the fire has been isolated to a Kerosene space heater, investigators concluded.

When using a space heater, it is recommended to keep them at least three feet away from combustible items such as paper, blankets and clothing. People should also turn them off at night or when they’re not at home, fire safety experts recommend.
