SOUTHSIDE ART LEAGUE presents a one-artist show by Indianapolis artist Jo Atkinson Belmont in January. Our guest artist will be exhibiting a collection of her transparent watercolor paintings and several ceramic pieces. Artwork will be displayed from Jan. 3-27. FRANKLIN REGIONAL SWIM TEAM has opened registration for its winter developmental season, which begins practices on Jan. 2. Open evaluations for new swimmers will be held on Jan. 3 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Franklin Community High School; swimmers will be placed in groups based on age and skill levels. Registration will remain open until Jan. 14. FRST is also still offering lessons for children and adults. The Refuge is encouraging Johnson and Marion County residents to bundle up and raise cold, hard cash for The Coldest Night of the Year Walk, a family-friendly winter fundraising walk for Johnson and Marion County homeless, hungry and hurting. Participants will walk a 2K or 5K route, can warm up with toasty drinks at rest stops along the way and will be able to celebrate their efforts together at the finish line. FUNDRAISERS

25TH ANNUAL CARRIE CLAYBURN MEMORIAL DINNER, Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. An evening out consisting of a pork chop dinner and high school basketball will help benefit a scholarship fund. Held at Indian Creek High School, 803 W. Indian Creek Drive, Trafalgar. Dinner will be served until halftime of the basketball game between Indian Creek and Northview. Pork chops are being provided by the Indian Creek FFA. A free will offering will go to a scholarship in Clayburn’s name. Clayburn was active in 4-H and was a member of a soil judging team at Indian Creek High School. She died on Sept. 7, 1998 of acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. She was studying horticulture at IUPUI at the time of her death.

SAVE TIME AND MONEY WHILE EATING WELL, Jan. 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. Food prices have increased considerably over the past year. However, there are still ways for us to reduce our spending at the grocery store and eat well. Healthy food choices, shopping tips, and meal planning ideas will be shared by Health and Human Sciences educator Diana Stone. Also learn smart shopping strategies to maintain nutritional value and food quality to help give you the best food value for your money. Food samples will be shared along with a variety of recipes. FENCING FOR FUN AND FITNESS, Jan. 20 from 3 to 4 p.m. Sharpen your fitness routine with fencing! Coach Cardenas from Salle des Lutins Fencing Club will give an overview of the sport of fencing and demonstrate how anyone can incorporate the basic moves of fencing into their workout and have a little fun at the same time. Ages 15 and older.

AARP FOUNDATION is seeking local volunteers to help taxpayers with tax preparation and assistance in filing tax returns. Volunteers do not need to be AARP members but should be computer literate and have some familiarity with federal and state income taxes.
