Four locals win regional titles

A quartet of county girls took home championships from the IHSGW regional at Franklin on Saturday. The host Grizzly Cubs got wins from Ayla Stevenson at 120 pounds and Jazlinn Diaz-Avalos at 145, while Center Grove’s Aaliyah Brown was the 100-pound champ and Whiteland’s Leila Thomas claimed the top spot at 170.

Also advancing to the semistate round were Franklin wrestlers Avalee Reynolds (100 pounds), Ella Keller (105), Scarlett Skirvin (125), Rachel Mills (135), Sam Carrico (140), Lily Bridges (155), Breaunna Lapier (190) and Sophie Taylor (235); Whiteland’s Kylie Alltop (115 pounds) and Kayci Woods (130); and Greenwood’s Sophia Rygiel (155 pounds) and Natalie Flores (170).

Trojans second at Al Smith

Center Grove finished second to Crown Point at the prestigious Al Smith Classic, which concluded Saturday in Mishawaka. Reese Courtney and Wyatt Krejsa led the way for the Trojans, winning individual titles at 144 and 150 pounds, respectively. Eddie Goss was second at 132 and Nate Johnson at 285, while Charlie LaRocca (120 pounds) and Dominic Brown (126) were third in their weight classes.

Basketball

Warrior boys third in Lawrenceburg

Whiteland’s boys defeated Guerin Catholic on Saturday, 65-59, to finish third in the Ray Furney Holiday Classic at Lawrenceburg. The Warriors (6-5) fell to Fort Wayne Blackhawk 73-63 in the semifinal round, with Jazz Banwait scoring 15 points, Ethan Edwards 14 and Gavin Stubbe 13.

Hoosier Basketball Magazine available

Featuring three Johnson County players, the 2023-24 edition of Hoosier Basketball Magazine is now available to order by mail. The magazine, which features Indian Creek’s Faith Wiseman and Franklin’s Micah Davis on the traditional cover and Indian Creek’s Lauren Foster on the table of contents page. Wiseman is also featured on the alternate “champions cover” edition. Either can be ordered by calling or texting 317-925-8200 or by emailing [email protected]. Several newsstand locations around the state will have copies available in January.

Men’s basketball edged by Manchester

Franklin College’s late comeback bid came up just a tad short in a 68-65 home loss to Manchester on Saturday. Lynn King finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in defeat for the Grizzlies (4-7, 2-2 HCAC), while Whiteland grads Logan Willoughby and Austin Willoughby had 10 and eight points, respectively, in the win for the Spartans.

Women’s basketball drops road clash

A rough first quarter put Franklin College in a deep hole it never recovered from in an 82-52 loss at DePauw on Saturday afternoon. The Grizzlies (8-3) got nine points from Jordan Coon and eight from Payton Seay.
