Walmart announces plans to remodel local stores

Franklin’s Walmart is about to get a new look.

More than $500 million in upgrades to 117 Walmart stores across the country including the store at 2125 N. Morton St.

“For us, this is a huge deal,” said Hunter Hart, senior vice president of Walmart Realty in a news release on the investment. “It’s the largest single-day roll-out of re-grand openings in the history of Walmart, and while massive in its own right, this week’s events are but a tile in the mosaic – we’ve invested over $9 billion in the past two years to upgrade more than 1,400 stores across the country.”

The upgraded stores are designed to improve customer and associate experience in a modern way. The renovation will begin in spring and be wrapped up by summer, said a Walmart spokesperson.

“The Walmart location on North Morton Street will be renovated to create a better shopping experience for customers,” they said. “Renovations are expected to begin in March and we anticipate the project will be complete this summer. The store is expected to be open during regular business hours and some renovations will be conducted at night, after closing.”

Improvements to expect:

  • New signage, fixtures and LED lighting throughout the store;
  • Refreshed exterior including new paint and signage;
  • Remodeled bathrooms and mother’s room;
  • Transformation of the front end of the store;
  • Expanded grocery pick-up and delivery system;
  • Expanded pharmacy with new private screening rooms for pharmacist consultations and services;
  • Community-inspired mural.

Remodeled Walmarts feature a new mural as part of Walmart’s Community Mural Program, the largest public-facing art installation celebrating communities across America, the spokesperson said. They anticipate the mural will feature local themes directly related to the city of Franklin and is a symbol of Walmart’s commitment to the local community.

The Walmart Supercenter on State Road 135 in Greenwood will also be undergoing a renovation. For an idea of how the renovations will look, people can check out the remodeled Walmart at 2025 Merchant Mile, Columbus.

The Franklin location recently announced the hiring of remodel associates amid the changes.

“Remodel associates are focused on assisting the store through the remodel process, including working with the fixtures, dismantling and setting up new fixtures and displays, and cleaning areas that have been remodeled,” the social media post reads.

Overnight remodel associates will be paid $15.50 per hour and will work Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Day shift remodel associates will be paid $14.00 per hour and will work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
