Fire at Greenwood self-storage facility injures two

A fire at a Greenwood self-storage facility injured two people, including a firefighter, and damaged at least six storage units Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to a reported structure fire at 6:13 a.m. Wednesday at County Line Self-Storage, 1485 W. County Line Road. Multiple calls had come in with initial notes saying that the caller could see flames in the storage units, according to a Greenwood Fire Department news release.

Greenwood Fire Engine 92 was the first on scene, reporting that a storage unit was on fire with a car involved. Additional fire companies were called from the White River Township Fire Department while units were still en route, according to the news release.

About 44 minutes after firefighters first arrived, the fire was marked under control. A little over an hour later, firefighters were able to confirm that all of the fire was out, the news release says.

At least six storage units were affected by the fire — some by the fire and some through forcible entry. Firefighters entered adjacent units in efforts to stop the spread of the fire throughout the building, the news release says.

Fire investigators from the Greenwood fire and police departments responded to investigate the cause and origin of the fire, which is still under investigation.

An individual who rents a unit at the complex reportedly told paramedics on scene that he had been living in his storage unit on and off for some time. Officials say it is unclear as of now if he was living in the unit at the time of the fire.

The individual was transported to the hospital in serious condition with suspected inhalation burns and multiple burns to his body, according to the news release.

A Greenwood firefighter was also injured on scene. He has been treated and released by Franciscan medical staff and will be on light duty during his recovery, the news release says.
