Indiana, federal tax filing season now open

It’s once again that time of year — tax season.

The Indiana Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service are now processing 2023 individual income tax returns. Officials with the DOR encourage taxpayers to use electronic filing, online payment and direct deposit for faster refunds and improved accuracy.

Employers must provide Forms W-2 by Tuesday. DOR officials say taxpayers should wait to file until they receive all their official tax documents and wage statements. Using an end-of-year paycheck stub or other unofficial sources of tax information risks the need to file an amended return later or delay their refund.

Taxpayers may also need other documents to file an accurate tax return, including documents on freelance, gig or business income, investments, interest, or prize winnings, DOR officials say.

Customers who wish to contact DOR directly can use Indiana Taxpayer Information Management Engine, or INTIME, secure messaging for the most efficient service. INTIME offers direct messaging to DOR and payment plans, and taxpayers can request the status of their refund.

Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income, or AGI, of $79,000 or less in 2023 may be eligible to file their taxes online for free with IRS Free File. There will be eight guided tax software vendors to choose from this year through a public-private partnership with the IRS.

To find the right IRS Free File product, taxpayers can:

  • Go to IRS.gov/freefile.
  • Click on the “Explore Free Guided Tax Software” button. Then select the “Find Your Trusted Partner” tool for help in finding the right product, or
  • Use the “Browse All Trusted Partners” tool to review each offer,
  • Select the desired product, and
  • Follow the links to the trusted partner’s website to begin their tax return.

Taxpayers have until April 15 to file and pay state and federal tax returns.
