John Eric Brinkman

INDIANAPOLIS

Mr. John Eric Brinkman, Indianapolis, passed away on the early morning of Sunday, January 21, 2024. He was 64. John was born May 12, 1959 in Indianapolis, Indiana, a son of the late George and Bessie (Skaggs) Brinkman.

John attended Greenwood High School and was a member of the graduating Class of 1977. While attending high school, he was a member of both the band and choir. He then attended Indiana Central University where he earned an Associates degree in Landscape Design and Architecture.

For 42 years, John had been employed as a fire investigator with the Greenwood Fire Department. He began his career with Myers Ambulance Service in 1977 and then was hired as a firefighter with the Greenwood Fire Department where he moved up and obtained the rank of Captain. During his time with GFD, he was a cadet advisor, city building inspector and then lastly, a fire investigator and inspector.

John was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 266 and was also a Boy Scout adult leader. John’s greatest joy was his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife, Sue Brinkman; his children, Kelly Lyons, Susan Lenz and Tyler Brinkman; 10 grandchildren as well as a great-grandson; his stepbrothers, Larry Shirley and Mark Shirley and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in passing by a sister, Karen Brinkman and a stepbrother, Stephen Shirley.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:30 AM, Friday, February 2, 2024 at the Grace Assembly of God, 6822 US 31 S., Greenwood, with Chaplain Bob Anderson officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 PM, Thursday, February 1, 2024 also at Grace Assembly of God, Greenwood. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with Honors rendered by the Greenwood Fire Department.
