Michelle Davis: Spend a day at the Statehouse

Hands-on, learning experiences are invaluable to young Hoosiers as they engage the world around them. That’s why I encourage Johnson County students ages 13 to 18 interested in learning more about our state and our history, to sign up to page during the 2024 session, which runs through mid-March.

As a page, students will assist House legislators and staff with various duties, tour the governor’s office, the Indiana Supreme Court, and the House and Senate chambers. Pages also witness the legislative process in person, including debates on various proposals for new laws in the House Chamber.

To get started, Hoosier students and parents can visit indianahouserepublicans.com/pageprogram and fill out an online application and select a date during the legislative session, which began on Jan. 8 and must conclude by March 14. Pages will receive an excused absence from school for the day. They are also responsible for their own lunch and transportation to and from the Statehouse.

Individual paging opportunities are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Larger groups will be scheduled for Wednesdays and parents should reach out to the page program by calling 317-232-9410 or email [email protected]. This is a great opportunity for siblings, local youth groups and clubs to spend a day with lawmakers and fellow young Hoosiers.

Last year, I welcomed several local students to the Statehouse, like Kate and Maggie Boyce, who are students from Greenwood. It’s always great to see young Hoosiers from Johnson County spending time at the capitol and learning about their state government. Civic responsibility is critically important, and paging is an opportunity to develop a passion for service.
