MORGANTOWN
Mary A. (Witt) Abbott, age 84 of Morgantown, passed away at home on Sunday morning, February 11, 2024.
Mary was born in Whiteland on December 13, 1939 to her parents, the late Clyde and Helen (Gaunce) Witt. She was a 1958 graduate of Morgantown High School. Mary was a homemaker and worked as babysitter in Morgantown for many years. Early in her career she worked for the State of Indiana and later worked in the kitchens for both Don &Donna’s Restaurant in Franklin and Smith’s Family Restaurant in Morgantown.
She attended the Morgantown Baptist Church. Mary enjoyed spending time and cheering on all her grandchildren and great grandchildren during their school activities and sporting events. She also enjoyed cooking and watching Judge Judy.
Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death on December 7, 2023 by her devoted husband of 65 years, Walter L. Abbott, whom she married on August 29, 1958 in Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by a son, James “Jim” Abbott; grandson, Colton Lee James Abbott; siblings, Elizabeth Stillabower, Clyde Jr., Bob, Sam, Benny, Jerry, and David Witt and an infant brother.
Mary is survived by her loving children, Karen A. (Steve) Hickman of Trafalgar, Kathy E. (Brian) Van Winkle of Morgantown and Jeff L. Abbott of Helmsburg; siblings, Nancy Witt of Greenwood and Denny (Debbie) Witt of Trafalgar; grandchildren, Jackie (Jamie) Owens, Chris (Brandy) Hickman, Brady (Sarah) Van Winkle, Joseph Van Winkle, Rachel (Justin) Gribbins, David James (Felicity) Abbott, Anna Lee Abbott, Ethan Lee James Abbott and Bailey Rossell; and 11 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation &Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
