College notebook: Barile helps lift Miami of Ohio baseball to win

Miami of Ohio freshman baseball player Garrison Barile singled, doubled and tripled in the team’s 17-9 victory over Oakland. The former Center Grove player drove in five of his team’s runs.

Barile also singled in the team’s 6-5 loss at Wright State.

Center Grove

Marian men’s golfer Brandon Heffner placed 30th individually with a three-round score of 222 as the Knights opened spring play with a ninth-place finish at the Keiser Cup. Teammate Luke Beetz tied for 59th with his 231.

Franklin College senior catcher Adam Taylor had a three-run home run as the baseball team defeated Hope, 11-0. In a 6-4 victory during the same series, senior pitcher Jackson Young pitched the first five innings for the Grizzlies, allowing three hits and striking out five.

Purdue Fort Wayne freshman catcher Grant Sawa drove in runs during both of his team’s losses at Evansville.

Morehead State pitcher Grant Herron struck out eight batters in five innings as his team defeated Butler, 27-15.

Alabama second baseman Bryce Eblin singled and scored a run in a 12-0 shutout of Indiana.

Indiana Wesleyan pitcher Drue Young got the start but no decision in the squad’s 7-5 win over Grace College, going the first five innings, allowing five hits and striking out six.

Indiana sophomore shortstop Tyler Cerny singled, doubled and drove in a run in the Hoosiers’ 9-7 victory over Dallas Baptist. In a 12-1 loss to Arizona, Cerny finished with two singles and scored IU’s lone run.

Senior first baseman Lexi Fair singled and scored a run for Southern Indiana softball in a 7-6 victory over Monmouth. Fair also singled and drove in a run in a 3-0 defeat of Sacred Heart and hit a solo home run in a 5-0 win over North Dakota.

Freshman guard Marcus Ankney had three rebounds and blocked a shot in Indiana Wesleyan’s 79-74 defeat of Huntington in the semifinals of the Crossroads League tournament. He had 12 points, two boards and a steal in the team’s 101-80 loss to Grace College.

Senior guard Emma Utterback had nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals as Vermont women’s basketball won at UMass Lowell, 55-51. Utterback was also named to the All-America East Conference first team.

Bentley guard Ella Thompson scored six points and had two assists in a 73-61 win over American International in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 tournament. Thompson was recently named conference player of the week, as well as first team all-conference.

Franklin

Marian freshman Brooke Coffman placed 16th in the high jump as the Knights’ women’s track and field squad finished eighth at the NAIA National Championships.

Purdue Fort Wayne third baseman Luke Miles had a two-run single in a 16-3 loss at Evansville.

Greenwood

Marian sophomore outfielder Anna Pritchett collected four base hits and scored three runs as the Knights won their first four games at the Spring Break Games.

Catcher Lexy Rees finished with five hits and drove in six runs as University of Indianapolis softball swept its four-game series at Wheeling. Teammate Dominique Proctor had five hits over the course of the four games, driving in three runs and scoring four.

Indian Creek

Braxton Christie tied for 27th individually with a two-round total of 155 as Franklin College men’s golf placed third of 13 teams at the Music City Shootout.

Franklin College senior pitcher Dylan Sprong got the start in an 8-7 win against Hope, working the first five frames, permitting two hits and striking out five.

Freshman guard Abby Fleetwood finished with six rebounds and an assist as Spring Arbor women’s basketball lost to Indiana Wesleyan, 80-67.

Whiteland

Senior Zach Ricketts carded a two-round total of 155 to tie for 27th as Franklin College men’s golf took third at the Music City Shootout.

Morehead State pitcher Luke Helton improved to 3-0 this season, allowing six hits in seven innings in the team’s 11-6 decision over Butler.

Greenwood Christian

Junior guard Izzy Reed finished with eight points and two assists as Indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball lost to Marian in the Crossroads League championship game, 77-66.

Roncalli

Freshman pitcher Keagan Rothrock (Whiteland) improved her record to 8-2 as Florida softball edged UCLA, 1-0. Rothrock’s complete game included two hits allowed, two walks and five strikeouts.
