Bridge projects to reduce SR 144 to one lane in Johnson, Morgan counties

Two bridge rehabilitation projects will reduce State Road 144 down to one lane in Johnson and Morgan counties starting Monday.

For the first project, Indiana Department of Transportation contractor E&B Paving Inc. plans to work on State Road 144 over Moore Creek in Johnson County on or after Monday. This is in Hopewell, near County Road 100 West, according to INDOT.

State Road 144 will be reduced to one lane over Moore Creek using temporary traffic signals while work is in progress. Motorists will be unable to access County Road 100 West from State Road 144 throughout the duration of the project. Signage will be placed in the area prior to the start of construction, INDOT officials say.

For the second project, E&B Paving will be working on State Road 144 over the White River in Morgan County, also starting on or after Monday. This work will take place on State Road 144 just west of Interstate 69 near Waverly, according to INDOT.

Similar to the Johnson County project, State Road 144 will be reduced to one lane over the White River using temporary traffic signals while work is in progress. Signage will be placed in the area prior to the start of construction, INDOT officials say.

Work on both projects is expected to be complete by late November, weather permitting. The work is part of a $5.2 million contract awarded to E&B Paving in March 2024, which includes a total of five bridge projects throughout Johnson and Morgan counties, INDOT officials say.

All work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story misidentified the creek as Moose Creek due to an INDOT error.Â
