Sectional brackets revealed

The IHSAA released the pairings for this week’s sectionals on Monday evening, with a quick turnaround for all of the teams involved — and a big matchup right out of the gate.

In the Center Grove Sectional, the 14th-ranked Trojans drew a Wednesday first-round matchup with rival Franklin, the reigning champion and the state’s No. 6 team. Indian Creek received a bye and will await the winner in the semifinal round on Thursday. On the bottom side of the bracket, Greenwood Christian will open against Greenwood with the winner to meet Whiteland in the other semi.

Edinburgh received a first-round bye at the Columbus North Sectional and will play either Columbus East or the host Bull Dogs, tied for 14th in the state with Center Grove.

Trojans win at Franklin

Carson Poe led a balanced effort with a 74 as Center Grove’s White team cruised to victory at the Franklin Invitational on Saturday, posting a score of 309 at The Legends to beat Westfield by 11 strokes. Nate Horner and Louie Teed each shot 78 for the Trojans, while L.J. Brennan added a 79. Franklin’s White team was third with a 326, led by Matt Ferguson’s 74, while the Grizzly Cubs’ Blue team got 79s from Kadin Gibson and Reid Davidson on the way to a 330, tied for seventh.

The Center Grove Red team took part in the Brownsburg Invitational, finishing sixth of 15 teams with a 329. Nathan Springer led the Trojans there with a 78.

Baseball

Warriors win tourney title

Peyton Dickens pitched a one-hit shutout and delivered four RBIs at the plate as Whiteland routed Danville 13-0 and edged Covenant Christian 5-3 to claim a tournament championship at Warren Central on Saturday. Kayden Wilson drove in three runs in the Danville rout for the Warriors (13-8), while Ethan Engel pitched a complete game in the title-game win.

Franklin College

Softball eliminated from tourney

Franklin College saw its season come to a close with a 5-3 loss to Mount St. Joseph in an elimination game at the HCAC tournament on Saturday. Eriana Wagner hit a solo home run for the Grizzlies (27-14), while Kennedy Bond added an RBI single. Center Grove grad Kaci Finchum drove in a run and Whiteland alum Macy Cornelius scored one for the Lions, who lost to top-seeded Transylvania in the championship game.
