Students from the Aeronautical Center of Technology sent rockets soaring high into the sky Friday.

The dozen or so students from the center, located at Indy South Greenwood Airport, used a computer to launch multi-stage rockets they designed at a farm field near the intersection of Five Points Road and Main Street in Greenwood. The launches were the culmination of months of work, giving students a chance to test off skills learned as part of the center’s Rockets 102 class.

In January, students were given a four-page packet with criteria for their rockets — how many engines they could have, how many fins, weight and more. Since then they have been working each week to design, create and ultimately test their rockets, instructor Greg Hill said.

They also learned how NASA uses computers to launch rockets, trying their hand with their own program.

Friday’s launch was the end their time at the center this year. They previously launched single-engine rockets in November, though without the aid of a computer.
