College notebook: Messer places sixth in Big Ten decathlon

Indiana’s Garrett Messer took sixth in the decathlon at the Big Ten men’s track and field meet, scoring 6,956 points. The freshman from Center Grove’s performances were highlighted by runner-up status in the discus (137 feet, 8 inches) and placing sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.35 seconds.

Indiana State freshman Parker Doyle ran a time of 1 minute, 5.70 seconds to finish eighth in the 400-meter hurdles as the Sycamores were crowned team champions at the Missouri Valley Conference men’s track and field meet.

Senior first baseman Lexi Fair singled twice for Southern Indiana softball in a 3-2 loss to Eastern Illinois at the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.

Mount St. Joseph senior third baseman Kaci Finchum had an RBI single and scored a run in a 5-3 victory over Franklin College at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Association softball tournament.

Indiana Wesleyan senior pitcher Drue Young was named to the All-Crossroads League baseball second team after striking out 79 batters in 81 innings with an earned-run average of 3.44.

Freshman shortstop Drew Culbertson singled and scored a run for Missouri in its 12-11 home loss to Auburn.

Senior catcher Adam Taylor produced an RBI double for Franklin College in its 11-7 loss to Anderson in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.

Alabama senior Bryce Eblin singled in the baseball team’s 6-3 loss to visiting LSU.

Indiana baseball won one of three games at Nebraska, getting a home run and double from sophomore shortstop Tyler Cerny.

Greenwood

Senior catcher Lexy Rees homered and scored a total of five runs as the University of Indianapolis softball team won all three of its games at the Division II Midwest Regional. Senior Dominique Proctor contributed a single in the series, and followed it up with a single and double in the Greyhounds’ 4-2 win over Trevecca Nazarene in the first round of the NCAA Division II Super Regional.

Whiteland

Lipscomb high jumper Bella Jackson placed second at the ASUN women’s track and field meet, clearing 5 feet, 9¼ inches to earn second team all-conference status. Jackson also took 11th in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.11 seconds.

Sophomore pinch runner Haley Wilkerson scored a run for Southern Illinois softball in its 4-2 win over Illinois State in the semifinal of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

Trine sophomore Debbie Hill picked up her fourth save of the season, pitching two hitless innings and striking out two, in the Thunder’s 1-0 win over Adrian at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament. She hit a two-run home run in a 17-1 victory over Calvin.

Junior leftfielder Macy Cornelius singled and drove in a run for Mount St. Joseph in its 5-2 loss to Transylvania in the title game of the HCAC tournament. She also singled, stole a base and scored in a 5-3 decision over Franklin College.

Senior Luke Helton pitched the first 7 2/3 innings for Morehead State in its 7-6 victory at Eastern Illinois, allowing eight hits, walking three and striking out nine batters.

Sophomore second baseman Erin Lee singled for Southern Illinois softball in its 4-2 victory over Illinois State in a Missouri Valley Conference tournament semifinal.

Greenwood Christian

IUPUI senior men’s basketball player Derek Petersen and women’s basketball player Brooklyn Stubblefield were among the Jaguar athletes named to the Spring Academic Advisor’s List with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
