Edinburgh softball cruises into sectional final

Edinburgh coach Ben Taylor said earlier in the season that his team’s difficult early-season schedule — one that had the Lancers playing four Class 4A teams by April 1 — was arranged in hopes of a payoff on the back end.

The bet is paying off so far.

On Monday, the Lancers opened Class A sectional play with a 14-3 semifinal rout of Morristown at Indianapolis Lutheran. The victory puts them into Wednesday’s championship game against the winner of Tuesday’s clash between the host Saints and Greenwood Christian.

Edinburgh (9-11) has won nine of its last 11 games after losing its first nine of the season. Their lone defeats in that time have come against Mid-Hoosier Conference champion Hauser and Class 4A No. 5 Center Grove.

Morristown struck first in Monday’s clash, scoring a run in the top of the first inning, but the Lancers answered with three in the bottom half and then scored four times in both the third and fourth to stretch their lead to 12-1. The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the fifth to extend the game before Edinburgh put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to end it.

Senior catcher Kyah Streeval provided the biggest punch offensively for the Lancers, going 3 for 3 with three doubles, two walks and six runs batted in. Sophomore Kenna Streeval — who also struck out 11 while going the distance in the pitching circle — had three hits and two walks at the top of the order, scoring four runs. Alix Streeval knocked in three runs and Eloise Cox two for Edinburgh.
