Joseph “Joe” Lee Carter

Joseph Lee “Joe” Carter, 92 of Indianapolis, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024.

He was born on September 29, 1931 in Bargersville, Indiana to Oren Carter and Mary Mildred (Brickey) Gillaspie. Joe married Ramona (Baker) Carter on December 23, 1951. She preceded him in passing on August 16, 2013. He is survived by children, Louis Carter (Sue) and Monica Heath (Greg); grandchildren, O.J. Haimes (Tonya), Amanda Heath, Wyatt Heath, Chelsea McFarland (Chris), Ryan Gillum (Simone), Crystal Stephens (Will), Sam Gillum, Sophia Carter and Annie Brown (Bryce); nine great-grandchildren and many other extended family members. He was preceded in passing by his parents, wife, Ramona, daughter, Sally Jo Gillum and brother, Phil Carter.

Joe was a 1951 graduate of Union Township High School.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving from 1951 to 1955 serving on the USS Higbee DD-806.

After his time in service, he worked at Superior Oil with his own route, primarily delivering heating oil. During the summer months, he ran an ice cream truck. He also operated a service station in Indianapolis. In 1976, he purchased Jackson Oil &Solvents and ran a successful business until he decided to retired in 1989.

He attended Mt. Carmel Christian Church. He was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a member of the Union Village Masonic Lodge No. 545, F &A M; Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite and the Johnson County Shrine Club. Joe enjoyed spending time with family, gambling and playing cards; fishing and hunting, mushroom hunting, horses, watching sports and being a boss.

Rev. Cleon Wright will conduct a Celebration of Joe’s life on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton Street, (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, May 24th from 11:00 a.m. to time of service at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Nineveh Cemetery in Nineveh, Indiana.
