Locals lift Team Indiana to zone victory

Nine Johnson County swimmers were a part of Team Indiana’s narrow victory over Team Illinois in the Central Zone 14 & Under Championship, which concluded Sunday evening in Fargo, North Dakota. Indiana narrowly outpointed its neighbor, 4,856 to 4,834, while Team Ohio was a distant third with 3,632.5.

Trevor Smith of the Franklin Regional Swim Team was the top local scorer, concluding the weekend with 49 points. Smith was second in the boys 11-12 100-meter backstroke and third in the 50 back while also swimming on a pair of victorious relays. FRST’s Charli Alyea earned 44 points and three medals in the 11-12 girls division, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 1,500 freestyle and a third-place effort in the 800 free.

Averie Matern of Center Grove Aquatic Club finished with 34.5 points and a pair of top-eight individual finishes in the 13-14 girls division, while CGAC teammate Matthew Cuadros scored 33 points and placed second in the 13-14 boys 100 breaststroke.

Other county swimmers competing at the meet were Harper Bartling, Zhoey Bratcher, Cooper Finney and Braylon O’Leary from FRST and Elyza Tschopp from the Greenwood Gators; Bratcher and Finney scored three points apiece.
