Former Greenwood man convicted of sex crime

A Johnson County jury has convicted a former Greenwood man of a sex crime.

David Bailey, 37, was convicted of sexual misconduct with a minor, as a Level 4 Felony.

At sentencing, Bailey will face up to 12 years in prison. Bailey is scheduled to be sentenced by Superior Court 3. Judge Douglas Cummins on Sept. 6.

The investigation conducted by the Greenwood Police Department began two years earlier in August 2022 after Bailey was reported to have sexually abused a child from 2019 until 2021. Evidence was presented by the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday and the jurors found Bailey guilty as charged after only 37 minutes of deliberations, according to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Prosecutors Brianna Acker and Carrie Miles of the Sex Offender and Domestic Violence unit, or SODV, at the prosecutor’s office.

“I am moved by the courage of our young victim who came forward and was willing to face her tormentor in open court,” Acker said in a statement. “Without her, we wouldn’t be able to protect other children from this criminal.”

Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner said Greenwood Police Detective Kortney Burrello put the case together expertly and with care for the victim.

“A lot of people don’t realize how difficult and heartbreaking this type of work is. We appreciate our sex crimes detectives for protecting our children,” Hamner said in a statement. “I also appreciate the hard work and dedication of our deputy prosecutors in the SODV unit. Putting these deviants in prison where they can’t hurt more kids is what they do every day. I’m very pleased to see yet another pervert facing more than a decade in a steel cage. It’s where they belong.”
