Girls golf

Locals square off at Hickory Stick

Center Grove’s Red team placed sixth among 18 teams as part of a loaded field in the Trojan Classic at Hickory Stick on Saturday. London Dodson paced the No. 11 Trojans with a 79, followed by Amanda Wallace and Zoe Land with matching 85s and Madisyn Bell with an 86. Magnolia Miller, competing as an individual, carded a 1-over-par 72 to finish second on the leaderboard.

No. 5 Franklin was seventh, two shots behind Center Grove, led by Addi Bright’s 77 and Lexi Ray’s 79. Reese Phillips (88) and Mel Flora (93) rounded out the Grizzly Cub scoring. Center Grove White was 13th in the team standings and Whiteland was 18th.

Braves finish fourth in WIC

Competing in the Western Indiana Conference tournament for the last time, Indian Creek came away with a fourth-place finish after totaling 425. Allison Vavul, Emily Hogue and Shelby Roach each earned all-conference honors with their performances.

County teams race at Plainfield

Whiteland’s girls were third and the boys fifth at the Plainfield Relays on Saturday. Isabella Fuentes and Lena Shipp were the No. 2 duo overall in the girls race, while the Warrior tandem of Nolan Edens and William Watson was fourth on the boys side. Franklin finished fourth in the boys race and the girls were eighth. Isaiah Tunis and Liam Fennig teamed up to finish ninth for the Grizzly Cub boys, while Hannah Lindsay and Ava Ott wre sixth to lead the girls. Lily Rollings and Ryann Marker (10th) led the Greenwood girls to a seventh-place showing, while the Woodmen boys were 11th.

Trojans compete in Carmel

Center Grove’s boys won the freshman/sophomore race and placed sixth in the junior/senior competition at the John Cleland Invitational. Ethan Holbrook (13:13.7) and Jayden Salo (13:17.8) were sixth and seventh individually in the underclass race for the Trojans, while Michael Leavitt (13:00.7) placed 12th among the upperclass boys.

The Trojan girls were seventh in the junior/senior meet, led by Hallie Mimbela (16:02.7) in 17th, and sixth in the freshman/sophomore race.

Trojans sweep, remain unbeaten

Class 3A No. 5 Center Grove remained perfect for the season, defeating Elkhart 2-0 and Castle 3-1 in the Trojan Classic on Saturday. Charlie Habig scored an assisted on Austin Lowden’s goal against the Lions, while Lowden, Owen Dorrell and Keaton Barnhizer each tallied once against the Knights. The Trojans moved to 5-0 on the year.

Warriors crush Bears

Whiteland rolled to an 8-0 home victory over Lawrence Central on Saturday. Madison Fleury, Kinley Waalkens and Rhianna Hardy each scored twice for the Warriors (3-1), with Alexa LaPorte and Elnora Stevenson adding one goal apiece.

Girls volleyball

Grizzly Cubs take tournament crown

Franklin won four straight matches to claim the championship at the LaPorte Invitational on Saturday. The Grizzly Cubs (6-0) beat Portage and New Prairie in two sets each and earned three-set wins over Goshen and the host Slicers.

Center Grove picks up sweep

Center Grove was a 30-28, 25-21, 25-9 winner over New Castle. The Trojans improve to 4-1 with the victory.

Lancers drop four at tourney

Edinburgh went 0-4 in a round-robin tournament at Henryville. Kinzie Purvis had 11 kills, 24 assists and five blocks overall for the Lancers (0-10), while Elizabeth Hernandez totaled 73 digs.

Boys tennis

Whiteland stays undefeated

Whiteland swept Linton-Stockton, Tri-West and Columbus East by 5-0 scores at home on Saturday. The Warriors (6-0) got three singles victories from Spencer Gillespie, while the No. 1 doubles team of Isaac Phegley and Gavin Stubbe was also a perfect 3-0.

Grizzly Cubs take two of three

Franklin won two of three matches at its invitational, getting a 4-1 victory over Heritage Christian and edging Mooresville 3-2 but losing to Greenfield-Central. Jaxson Doddridge earned a pair of singles points for the Grizzly Cubs, while the doubles team of Ethan Barnes and Carsten Bland also won twice; Nathan Neville won once in singles and once in doubles.

Hockey

SIYHA registration open for 2024-25

The South Indy Youth Hockey Association has opened registration for its 6U-14U house league and its 10U-14U travel league, open to both boys and girls. Players will get ice time twice a week at Perry Park throughout the season, which runs from October to April. To register or for more information, visit SIYHA.org.
