David “Dave” Marendt

David “Dave” Marendt, 76, of Greenwood, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2024. He was born on July 7, 1948 to the late David J. and Wilma J. (Schaekel) Marendt. Dave graduated from Howe High School in 1966. He received his Bachelor of Science degree through Saint Joseph’s College and his Master of Science degree through Indiana University. He taught Physical Education and Health for 41 years and he coached football for 49 years. In addition to football, Dave coached wrestling, track, and basketball throughout his career. For 25 summers, he loved coaching at the Ohio State University football camp.

Dave shared 42 years of marriage with his wife, Deb. Married in July 1982, they built a life filled with love, joy, and countless memories. Dave was a proud father to his daughters, Ali and Audi, and adored his two grandsons, Remy and Tripp.

As a teacher and coach, Dave spent his life dedicated to the growth and development of students and student athletes. Dave was a lifelong fan of sports, particularly football. His passion for football included the Ohio State Buckeyes and the countless football programs he worked with and coached. His last 21 years were with the Franklin College Grizzlies.

He had a vibrant personality and was beloved by all the players he coached with his TOUGH AS NAILS mantra and beaming smile. He enjoyed staying active through riding his bike, fishing, kayaking, and spending time with his family. Dave is survived by his wife, Deb (Sheets) Marendt, daughters, Audi (Matt) Shivers and Ali (Ryan) McElwain, brother, Tom Marendt, and sister, Pat Miller.

Dave’s outgoing personality and dynamic sense of humor will be dearly missed. His legacy of commitment, hard work, and dedication will forever live on through those who knew him.

Visitation will be on Sunday, September 8, 2024 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at G. H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens of Olive Branch, 1605 S. State Road 135. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, September 9, 2024 at 11:00am at Saints Francis &Clare Catholic Church, 5901 Olive Branch Road, Greenwood, IN 46143.
