Franklin College

Football suffers opening defeat

Struggling to get its offense going, Franklin College allowed 45 straight points before averting a shutout in a 45-7 loss at Ohio Northern on Saturday. Kam Jennings scored the lone touchdown for the Grizzlies on a 19-yard run with 5:21 remaining in the contest. Franklin, which was outgained by a 394-156 margin, got 14 tackles from DeMarion Newell and an interception from Haden Durnil.

Volleyball takes two of three

Franklin College grabbed a pair of victories at the Pam Briggs Classic in Columbus, Ohio over the weekend, rallying for five-set wins over host Capital and Westminster before falling to Otterbein. Hope Moring made the all-tournament team for the Grizzlies (3-5) after totaling 30 kills, 38 digs and eight service aces.

Women’s soccer loses road opener

Playing its first match away from home this season, Franklin College fell behind early on the way to a 2-0 defeat at Muskingum. The Grizzlies fall to 0-2-2 with the loss.

Cross country hosts invitational

Franklin College opened its season by hosting the Grizzly Invitational at Blue River Memorial Park in Shelbyville on Saturday. The men’s team finished 11th as a team, led by John Asplund’s 35th-place showing, while the women were 16th in the team standings.

Boys tennis

Braves shut out Lancers

Indian Creek was a 5-0 winner over Edinburgh on Saturday. Grant Dalton, Nick Winters and Grayson Taylor swept the singles points for the Braves, who got a win at No. 1 doubles from Trevor Cravens and Mason Frische and another at No. 2 from A.J. Emenhiser and Aaron Hickson.

Woodmen defeat Oracles

Greenwood earned a 4-1 win over Delphi at the Lebanon Invitational but lost to Greenfield-Central and the host Tigers. Carter Chatham and Keegan Lane each notched a pair of singles victories on the day for the Woodmen.

Girls soccer

Warriors fall to Orioles

Whiteland saw a four-match win streak come to an end with a 4-2 loss at Avon on Saturday. Kinley Waalkens and Bethany Floyd scored goals in defeat for the Warriors (6-2).

Cross country

Rollings, Shipp shine in Columbus

Greenwood’s Lilly Rollings ran a time of 18:05.1 to finish as the girls individual runner-up at the Rick Weinheimer Invitational in Columbus on Saturday. Lena Shipp was eighth individually to lead the Whiteland girls to a sixth-place team finish, while the Warrior boys were seventh. Rollings helped Greenwood’s girls place ninth overall; the Woodmen boys were 16th.

Trojan boys, girls finish third

Center Grove’s boys placed third of 14 teams at the State Preview meet in Terre Haute, paced by top-20 individual efforts from Jayden Salo (13th), Mason Vrshek (14th) and Michael Leavitt (17th). The Trojan girls were also third, with Hallie Mimbela (12th), Gretchen Meisberger (14th), Lexi O’Barr (16th) and Adriana Rosales (17th) leading the charge.
