A Greenwood Community High School teacher died in northern Indiana Monday.

Karla Bates, a science teacher at GCHS, died after having a medical problem while driving home from northern Indiana. Bates was starting her ninth year at GCHS as a biology teacher, Superintendent Terry Terhune said in a message to staff shared with the Daily Journal.

Her husband Dontay, who she recently married, survives.

“We are saddened by the news of losing a valuable member of our Greenwood family,” Terhune said. “Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers during this trying time.”

Grief counselors will also be on the high school’s campus throughout the day Wednesday, according to a message from GCHS officials.

“This is a heavy loss to our family,” Principal Michael Gasaway said in the message.
