Greenwood Christian’s second long road trip in as many weeks yielded better results this time around.
The Cougars played at North Central (Farmersburg) on Saturday evening, winning 33-21.
Junior quarterback Trey Dobson threw for 122 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 160 yards and three scores on 20 carries to lead GCA (4-2), which returns home Friday to host winless Clarksville.
Senior running back Evan McIntire had his number called 12 times for 52 rushing yards.
Conditions weren’t ideal, though the Cougars did what needed to be done to bounce back from last week’s 64-48 loss at Milan.
“The whole mess of this storm, that definitely played into North Central’s favor,” Greenwood Christian coach Andre Dobson said. “The field was muddy and soaked, so that played into their favor with our speed. They’re a big team, and they wanted to pound the ball on us.”
North Central scored the game’s first touchdown, but Trey Dobson countered with scoring runs covering 32, 63 and 15 yards while still finding time to toss a 50-yard TD pass to Daniel Honeycutt as the visitors settled in with a 26-14 halftime lead.
From there, it was a matter of keeping the Thunderbirds at a safe distance.
McIntire led all GCA tacklers with nine, one ahead of Eli Jackson. Kevin Gierke and Honeycutt had seven apiece, while Brandt Kieninger was good for six.
Four GCA players finished with two receptions apiece — Honeycutt, McIntire, Zach Haynes and Isaiah Johnson Jr.
Despite running six fewer offensive plays than North Central, the Cougars still held a 352-284 advantage in total yardage. The Thunderbirds also hurt themselves with two turnovers and 98 yards in penalties.
