ISP investigating Southport officer-involved shooting

Indiana State Police Detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Southport.

Monday at 12:29 a.m., an on-duty Southport Police Officer attempted a traffic stop near the entrance to Berkley Commons Apartment Complex. The driver led the officer to the 2000 block of Appleton Drive in Southport. The driver then got out and fled on foot, according to an ISP press release.

During the foot pursuit, it is believed the suspect fired at least one shot and the officer discharged his weapon toward the suspect. The driver was taken into custody and had injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. He was treated on scene by officers until medics arrived, then transported by ambulance to a local hospital, , ISP officials say

His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. No officers or uninvolved people were injured in this incident, ISP officials say.

The involved officer was equipped with a body-worn camera and it was activated during this incident. ISP is still investigating the incident and they joined the investigation at the request of the Southport police chief, , ISP officials say.

The suspect in this case is now under arrest for outstanding warrants, ISP officials say. Charges pertaining to this incident will be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office upon review of the investigation.
