Edinburgh Police warns of ‘spoofing’ scam

Edinburgh Police Department is warning of a scam involving the spoofing of the agency’s phone number.

In the scam, a male suspect spoofs, or fakes, the Edinburgh Police Department’s number on a phone’s caller ID to make it appear the agency is calling residents. The male caller tells residents police are investigating them for a crime and asks for their identifying information, Edinburgh Police said in a Facebook post Monday.

Edinburgh Police will not call and ask for anyone’s driver’s license number, Social Security number, etc., the post says.

If residents receive a call like described above, they should give no information and hang up immediately, police say.

Those with questions or concerns, can call the Johnson County 911 Dispatch non-emergency line at 317-346-6336 and request that an office contact them, the post says.
