The violent attack on the husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, raises two important questions.

Without taking anything away from the 2022 elections, let’s start thinking about next year. The primaries, the absurdities and the virtues of the candidates, the restrained promotional materials of the money-starved candidates, and the flamboyant eructations of the well-financed will again become tedious.

Mary Ellen and I promised each other that during our recent vacation we would not check our emails. At dinner each night, we conversed and learned a great deal about each other, things that have happened to each of us since we got our first cell phones in 1990.

It doesn’t take much to make me feel old these days.

Vladimir Putin is smiling, and that isn’t good news. What Putin is smiling about is a recent development in our country during this election season. As he has hoped, both political parties — Democrat and Republican — have factions within them that question the level of support for Ukraine.

“It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man,” is my favorite quote from my all-time favorite western. “Unforgiven” is the Oscar-winning, 1992 Clint Eastwood movie about William Munny, a has-been killer who learns of a $1000 bounty in Big Whiskey, Wyoming that brings him out of retirement.

I love that insurance commercial where several older women are taping pictures to their “wall” — a nod to Facebook and the trope about technology and senior citizens.

First, I congratulate myself for not making a COLA joke. I’m a serious economist. Also, I couldn’t think of one.

“Fall is my favorite season.” I hear that a lot this time of the year.
