A Sunday afternoon fire claimed the life of a Bargersville woman.

When Bargersville Fire crews arrived at the scene in the 1400 block of County Road 700 West the fire was fully involved. Family at the scene reported that a female relative was trapped inside, according to a press release from Bargersville Community Fire Department.

When the call was dispatched at 12:17 p.m., heavy black smoke was visible from several miles away. It took about 13 minutes to arrive at the scene, which is six miles southwest of Bargersville, the release says.

It took crews approximately 15 minutes to get the fire under control, the release says.

Once crews could enter the home safely, the woman was already deceased. The name of the woman is not being released at this time, the release says.

The woman lives with two other family members who were not home at the time of the fire, the release says. Smoke alarms in the home were in working order, the family told firefighters.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a medical checkout, the release says.

Investigators from Bargersville and White River Township fire departments, Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Johnson County Coroner’s Office are working together to determine the cause of the fire and cause of death, the release says.

About 35 firefighters from Bargersville, White River Township, Green Township, Morgantown fire departments were at the scene, along with tanker crews from Trafalgar, Green Township, Nineveh Township and Whiteland fire departments, the release says.

Seals Ambulance, Trafalgar Police and Bargersville police also responded. Greenwood Fire Department provided station coverage, the release says.
