College update – January 16

Tennessee-Chattanooga wrestler Sean Mappes, a Center Grove graduate competing at 174 pounds in a 22-13 dual meet loss to Iowa State, defeated Lelund Weatherspoon, ranked 18th in the nation at the time, by a 4-3 score.

Weatherspoon, a redshirt junior, is a two-time NCAA qualifier and was a Big 12 champion in 2014 and a second-place finisher in 2015, losing 2-1 to Oklahoma State in the final.

Mappes won 3-1 in Chattanooga’s 21-9 win against Grand Canyon and was defeated 6-3 in a 24-13 dual meet loss to Rider. His record this season is 12-7.

Center Grove

Arizona swimmer Emma Schoettmer won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.28) and the 200 breaststroke (2:17.60) to help the Wildcats defeat Northern Arizona, New Mexico State, and Oregon State in a four-team meet.

DePauw’s Abby Sheehan was third of eight in both the 100 butterfly (1:05.08) and the 100 backstroke (2:08.75) in a three-team meet with Denison and Ohio Wesleyan. DePauw defeated Ohio Wesleyan and lost to Denison.

The Ball State women lost to Xavier and IUPUI in a three team swimming meet. The Cardinals’ Kaiti Sullivan was ninth of 10 in both the 100 breaststroke (1:08.51) and 200 breaststroke (2:32.35). Competing for Xavier, which defeated both the Cardinals and Jaguars, Mikaela Saugstad was third of 11 in the 400 IM (4:42.19), sixth of 10 in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.03), and eighth of 10 in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.49). In the men’s meet, Ball State’s Jake Eckert was sixth of eight in the 400 IM (4:24.58), fifth of nine in the 200 butterfly (2:01.06), and eighth of nine in the 200 backstroke (2:08.75). The Cardinals men lost to both Xavier and IUPUI.

Purdue’s Justin Veteto, competing at the Gene Edmonds Indoor Track and Field Invitational at Purdue, was third of nine in the 200-meter dash (22.27) and third of six in the 60-meter hurdles (8.21).

The Indiana women’s track and field team tied Tennessee 61-61 in a dual meet. The Hoosiers’ Sydney Clute won the pole vault (13-¾), and Taylor Pennington was third of five in the high jump (5-1).

The Ball State women’s track and field team finished third of five teams at the Bowling Green Indoor Track and Field Open. The Cardinals’ Jordan Timmons was 14th of 23 in the mile (5:32.875)

The IPFW men’s basketball team (14-4, 3-0) defeated South Dakota 85-65 and Denver 65-64. Joe Reed had five points (2 for 6, 0 for 1, 1 for 3), three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 26 minutes against South Dakota and five points (2 for 4, 0 for 1, 1 for 2), three assists, one blocked shot, one steal and a team-high nine rebounds in 30 minutes against Denver.

The Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball team (17-2, 5-2) lost 91-80 to Grace and won 74-65 against Taylor. Jonny Marlin had 12 points (4 for 9, 2 for 4, 2 for 3), two rebounds, and a team-high six assists in 33 minutes against Grace and a team high 20 points (8 for 13, 4 for 6, 0 for 0), seven rebounds, two steals and a team-high seven assists in 37 minutes against Taylor.

The Ancilla men’s basketball team (12-4) defeated Kalamazoo Valley 67-63 and Grand Rapids 69-66. Anderson McCoy had 12 points (3 for 10, 2 for 8, 4 for 4), seven assists, five rebounds and one steal in the two wins.

The Anderson women’s basketball team (3-10, 2-4) lost 64-59 to Defiance and 75-66 to Bluffton. Shelby Shaffer had 12 points (4 for 13, 3 for 7, 1 for 2), three rebounds, two steals and a team-high seven assists in 33 minutes against Defiance and 16 points (5 for 9, 3 for 5, 3 for 4), five rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes against Bluffton.

The Oberlin women’s basketball team lost 54-50 to Kenyon and won 55-35 against Hiram. Katie Lucaites played 19 minutes in the two games and had two points (0 for 1, 0 for 0, 2 for 2) and four rebounds.

The Manchester women’s basketball team (4-9, 2-4) lost 51-28 to Franklin. Kelcey Daugherty had four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 17 minutes for the Spartans.

Edinburgh

Running against Division I opponents at the Gene Edmunds Invitational at Purdue, Franklin’s Ashley Myers was eighth of 21 in the mile in 5:22.92.

The Elmhurst men’s basketball team (13-1, 3-0) defeated Augustana 77-75 and Millikin 73-65. Kyle Wuest had five rebounds, two assists,and a team high 26 points (7 for 15, 4 for 5, 8 for 8) in 38 minutes against Augustana and 11 points (3 for 9, 2 for 5, 3 for 4), six rebounds, one steal and a team-high four assists in 31 minutes against Millikin.

The Franklin men’s basketball team (1-12) lost 88-63 to Manchester and 76-66 to Mount St. Joseph. Caleb Giles had five points (2 for 5, 1 for 2, 0 for 1), three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 19 minutes in the two games.

Franklin

DePauw swimmer Alex Grissom was second of 13 in the 200 freestyle (1:43.57), second of 15 in the 500 freestyle (4:48.16), second of six in the 100 freestyle (47.93), third of seven in the 50 freestyle (22.27) and a member of the inning 400 freestyle relay team in a three team meet against Denison and Ohio Wesleyan. DePauw lost to Denison and won against Ohio Wesleyan.

The Ancilla men’s basketball team (12-4) defeated Kalamazoo Valley 67-63 and Grand Rapids 69-66. Dylan Phair had 12 points (5 for 7, 1 for 3, 1 for 3), four rebounds and two steals in the two games.

The St. Mary-of-the-Woods basketball team (7-8) defeated Cincinnati Christian 80-72 and Lincoln Christian 80-70 and lost 80-78 to Wilberforce. Shelby Parmer had a team-high 25 points (8 for 15, 4 for 6, 5 for 8), three rebounds, three steals and one assist in 20 minutes against Lincoln; 13 points (5 for 17, 1 for 6, 2 for 2), three rebounds, three steals, and two assists in 19 minutes against Cincinnati Christian; and eight points (2 for 12, 1 for 4, 3 for 4), one rebound, two assists, and one steal in 17 minutes against Wilberforce. Tara Parmer had 12 points (5 for 11, 2 for 6, 0 for 0), three rebounds, two assists, and a team-high six steals in 40 minutes against Lincoln; two points (1 for 11, 0 for 5, 0 for 0) three rebounds, three steals, and two assists in 19 minutes against Cincinnati Christian; and 10 points (2 for 11, 2 for 8, 4 for 6), one assist, and team highs in rebounds (8) and steals (5) in 19 minutes against Wilberforce.

Indian Creek

The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team (8-6, 1-2) lost 66-60 to Miami (Ohio) and 87-80 in overtime to Eastern Michigan. Ally Lehman had eight points (4 for 13, 0 for 1, 0 for 0), 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one blocked shot against Miami and 10 points (3 for 10, 0 for 3, 4 for 4), and team-highs in rebounds (9), assists (7), blocked shots (2) and steals (2) against Eastern Michigan.

Swimming at the Centre College Colonial Classic, Asbury’s Kaitlyn Smith was 16th in the 500 freestyle (6:15.17), 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:14.54), and 13th in the 1,650 freestyle (21:56.21).

Whiteland

The Ball State gymnasts lost to Kentucky. The Cardinals’ Sarah Ebeyer was 10th of 12 in the vault and ninth of 12 in the floor exercises.

The Eastern Michigan gymnasts defeated Pittsburgh, Towson, and Maryland at the Pittsburgh Quads. The winner’s Kim Ebeyer was fifth of 24 in the floor exercises and eighth of 24 on the bars.

The IU-Southeast women’s basketball team (6-7, 3-2) lost 85-72 to Asbury and defeated Midway 76-36. Michaela Harris had two points (1 for 3, 0 for 0, 1 for 2), six rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 36 minutes in the loss and seven points (3 for 5, 1 for 3, 0 for 0), eight rebounds, four assists, and one blocked shot in 28 minutes in the win.
