Ready for another season to tip off

Here we go.

It’s funny — just a few weeks ago I was on fall sports cruise control, gleefully bouncing from soccer to tennis to football to volleyball. Then I glanced at the calendar and noticed it — ‘Holy cow, girls basketball is here.’

Luckily, I don’t mind. As much as I dread the idea of winter weather arriving (I have all of my windows open as I write this, and I couldn’t be happier about it), I love basketball as much as just about any Hoosier does. Especially Indiana high school basketball. It makes me smile.

Looking at the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association preseason poll, there are three Johnson County teams receiving votes — Center Grove, Indian Creek and Whiteland. (Roncalli is 11th despite heavy graduation losses.) So there’s certainly some quality teams in the area.

And tonight, we get to see them for real. Well, at least some of them. Center Grove, Franklin and Greenwood are in action tonight, each team with its own set of questions to answer.

Realistically, none of those questions will be answered definitively tonight. Maybe not anytime in November, and maybe not even until we get into the postseason. But half the fun is watching teams try to figure it out in real time. No one’s coming into the year as a finished product. Every team has improvements to make, and most will make them.

You and I get to watch it all unfold over the next few months. Are you as excited as I am?
