College notebook: Young pitches IWU baseball to victory

Senior pitcher Drue Young pitched a three-hitter for Indiana Wesleyan baseball in its 12-1 win over Huntington. The former Center Grove player struck out six batters and didn’t issue a walk over seven innings, running his season record to 6-2.

Center Grove

Alabama second baseman Bryce Eblin singled in a 10-5 loss to Texas A&M. In a 10-9 win over the Aggies, Eblin singled twice and drove in two runs.

Indiana shortstop Tyler Cerny hit a sacrifice fly in a 7-1 win at Minnesota and belted a three-run homer in an 18-8 triumph against the Golden Gophers.

IU Kokomo pitcher Asa Christie worked an inning of relief, not allowing a hit, in the team’s 6-3 loss to Midway.

Alex Heck carded scores of 68, 73 and 75 to finish 21st individually as St. Leo men’s golf placed third at the Sunshine State Conference tournament.

Marian won the Sagamore Shootout, with Brandon Heffner securing medalist honors with scores of 69 and 73. Teammate Luke Beetz also made it into the top 10 individually with scores of 78 and 71.

Indiana golfer Noah Gillard tied for fifth place individually at Ohio State’s Robert Kepler Invitational, carding scores of 75, 72 and 70 for a 217 total. The Hoosiers were first in the team standings.

Freshman Garrett Messer, a member of the Indiana men’s track and field squad, placed 22nd in the discus and 11th in the 110-meter hurdles at the Jim Green Invitational.

Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis player Trey Thixton won his match at No. 1 doubles, but lost at No. 2 singles as the Wildcats lost to Holy Cross, 6-1.

Senior third baseman Kaci Finchum singled and scored a run for Mount St. Joseph softball in a 6-1 defeat of Anderson. She singled twice and scored a run in the second game of the doubleheader, a 7-5 win.

Southern Indiana won two of three games against SIUE, with senior first baseman Lexi Fair contributing two singles and a double in the series.

Whiteland

Senior Zach Ricketts tied for the 20th spot overall after shooting scores of 75 and 80 as Franklin College men’s golf won the nine-team Earlham Spring Invitational.

Indiana runner Claire Overfelt won the 5K at Kentucky’s Jim Green Invitational with a time of 17 minutes, 12.98 seconds.

Ball State freshman Brooklyn Taylor finished 15th in the shot put at the Jesse Owens Classic track and field meet at Ohio State.

Morehead State pitcher Luke Helton got the start, but didn’t factor into the decision, allowing nine hits over six innings in the team’s 8-6 loss to Lindenwood.

Trine sophomore Debbie Hill homered twice and picked up the win as the starting pitcher as the Thunder softball team defeated St. Mary’s, 15-0. Hill homered, singled twice and drove in six runs in a 13-1 victory over Alma.

Junior left fielder Macy Cornelius doubled in Mount St. Joseph’s 6-1 win over Anderson. She then singled twice, stole a base and scored a run in a 7-5 victory over the Ravens.

Quinten Gillespie won his match at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1, but lost at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, as Southern Indiana men’s tennis suffered a 4-3 loss to Lindenwood.

Greenwood

Thrower Emily Bonser helped the University of Indianapolis women’s track and field team claim the Little State Championships, finishing fourth in the hammer throw and sixth in the shot put.

Senior catcher Lexy Rees produced a total of three home runs and drove in eight runs as the UIndy softball team recorded doubleheader sweeps at Upper Iowa and Truman State. Outfielder Dominique Proctor chipped in with two hits and an RBI.

Sophomore outfielder Anna Pritchett finished with totals of four hits and four runs scored as Marian softball split a doubleheader with Indiana Wesleyan and swept Taylor.

Franklin

Franklin College senior Eli Cochrane was part of the second-place 4×400 relay that clocked a time of 3:22.97 at the Rose-Hulman Twilight meet.

Junior Ellie Beavins fired scores of 80 and 77 to finish fourth overall as Taylor women’s golf played at the Sagamore Invitational.

Indian Creek

Franklin College men’s golfer Braxton Christie tied for fifth place individually with scores of 72 and 78 to help the Grizzlies capture the team title at the Earlham Spring Invitational.
