County man arrested for domestic battery

A Johnson County man was arrested Tuesday after police said he strangled and struck his girlfriend.

Darin Stokes, 45, 3584 U.S. 31, was arrested on charges of domestic battery and strangulation.

While strangulation means the act of killing by squeezing the throat, Indiana law defines it as intentionally applying pressure to another person’s throat or obstructing their nose or mouth.

Stokes’ girlfriend went to Johnson Memorial Hospital to be checked out after a fight with Stokes. Hospital employees contacted police after the woman told them how she received her injuries, which included a cut on the back of her head, the report said.

The woman told police she and Stokes had an argument about her 17-year-old son on Tuesday afternoon at their home north of Franklin. She told deputies that Stokes smacked her and choked her to the point where she felt that she was going to pass out. She also cut her head on a window crank, the report said.

Sheriff’s deputies went to the home and arrested Stokes. He was taken to the Johnson County jail and released on $2,400 bond.
