Woodmen nearly shut out Herron

Greenwood’s girls basketball team held visiting Indianapolis Herron scoreless until the 1:33 mark of the fourth quarter Friday night in a 43-3 win.

For the Woodmen, it was their second consecutive victory.

“We want to develop habits, and that’s a lot of what we talked about coming into tonight’s game,” Greenwood coach Lee Taft said. “Overall, I was pleased because we were very unselfish.”

Junior Leah Moore and senior Ryan Bauer led Greenwood (2-2) with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while sophomore Bailee Taft chipped in seven.

Moore was also the team’s top rebounder with seven and Bauer had six, but the coach wasn’t pleased with the effort on the glass overall.

“Our rebounding was awful,” Lee Taft said. “We just didn’t compete the way we wanted to on the boards.

Herron’s only points of the night came in the closing moments. Sophomore Rylee Butcher drained a free throw with 1:33 remaining and freshman Saidi Manawat hit a field goal two possessions later.

Despite the large margin of victory, the Woodmen struggled offensively throughout most of the contest. In fact, Greenwood connected on only 19 of its 63 field goal attempts.

“We missed a lot of uncontested shots and that can’t happen,” Lee Taft said. “We were getting the shots we wanted, but we were forcing a lot of them.”

Greenwood opened the game with a full-court press and forced 12 Herron turnovers in the first period alone. The Achaeans (0-2) committed another eight turnovers before halftime as the Woodmen carried a 23-0 advantage into the third period.

“This group is still trying to figure each other out,” Taft said. “We have to continue to take the opportunity to develop better habits.”

Greenwood hosts Chatard at 7:30 tonight.
