Letter: Set good example with cellphone use

To the editor:

While walking my dog along the trail that parallels Morgantown Road just north of Stones Crossing Road on a recent Sunday morning, I saw a sheriff’s deputy pursue and pull over a young woman and her elementary-age daughter.

I presume this driver was exceeding the posted 35 mph speed limit or talking/texting on her cell phone like I have seen so many other drivers do in this school zone. When I looked into the driver’s SUV, I noticed that the driver and her daughter both had their cell phones out and were staring at them even as the deputy was writing out their traffic ticket.

I thought, this young mother is not setting a very good example for her young daughter. I hope this parent learns a lesson from this and changes her ways, as this little girl will soon be driving.

Hearts to this deputy for catching this offender, but there are many others doing this same thing everyday. This deputy may have saved someone from serious injury or worse on that Sunday morning.

Please pay attention while driving. Texting can wait — the life you save may be your child’s.
