Letter: Sheriff, paper deserve congratulations

To the editor:

Hearts to Sheriff Doug Cox and the Daily Journal for their efforts to protect residents from becoming victims.

On Nov. 1, the Daily Journal published a column by Greg Zoeller, Indiana attorney general, about the creation and success of the outreach services division of the attorney general’s office.

As a member of that department assigned to Johnson and other counties, I’d like to recognize the invaluable efforts of Sheriff Doug Cox and the Daily Journal in helping to prevent the people of Johnson County from becoming victims of fraud and scams.

Sheriff Cox regularly notifies the Daily Journal when his department learns that someone has been a victim of some scam or fraudulent activity. The Daily Journal, in turn, reports the story in an effort to make others aware so they can avoid being victimized. There have been at least three such stories appear just since Nov. 1.

These stories are an important part of raising awareness.

When I first started in the outreach division about 18 months ago, I assumed this was common practice in every county. As far as I have been able to determine, that’s not the case. This is truly a partnership unique to our sheriff and our newspaper. I’d like to recognize and thank them for their efforts on behalf of everyone in the county.

To reiterate the message in the article by Attorney General Zoeller, if your organization would like a free presentation about current scams, what to look for and how to protect yourself from identity theft, send an email to [email protected].
