Taking charge

Macy Carrabine almost felt a little bit like the newcomer this season.

Though she was the only senior on the Center Grove volleyball team, many of the Trojans’ younger players were already familiar with the team’s new head coach, Maggie Harbison, through club volleyball. Carrabine was starting from scratch.

“It was kind of like they knew what to expect and I didn’t,” Carrabine said. “But I think Maggie came in and did a great job.”

Carrabine did, too — and she wraps her high school career by being named the Daily Journal’s 2016 Player of the Year.

Center Grove had five freshmen in its regular rotation, and while those girls may have been familiar with Harbison, they still needed some veteran leadership on the floor. Carrabine was there to take on that responsibility.

“I feel like a lot of the younger players were looking up to me,” she said, “so whether it was leading on the court, off the court, I felt like I had to be a leader.”

Next season, Carrabine will be the new kid on the block when she joins the roster at the University of Denver. She plans to major in either communications or business there, and she’s excited to continue her volleyball career.

“I’m really pumped to get out there and just start working,” she said.
