Local sports roundup: April 29

During its annual review of bylaws on Monday afternoon, the Indiana High School Athletic Association voted to give full recognition to boys volleyball and girls wrestling beginning with the 2024-25 school year. Both had been classified as “emerging sports” by the IHSAA in 2022.

Both sports will now have official IHSAA state tournaments in 2025. The IBVCA has run a boys volleyball state tourney since 1994, and the IHSWCA started holding a girls wrestling tournament in 2017.

Girls wrestling now boasts more than 1,400 wrestlers across 177 schools statewide, while more than 100 schools are now fielding boys volleyball teams. Four of those — Center Grove, Franklin, Greenwood Christian and Whiteland — are in Johnson County.

Unified flag football was the last sport to be fully recognized by the IHSAA, making its official debut in 2018.

Also on Monday, a measure that would have added girls lacrosse as an emerging sport was tabled until the Executive Committee meeting in June. Another measure, authored by Franklin principal Steve Ahaus, that would change the criteria for classifying schools based on the number competing in a particular sport, failed for lack of a motion. The board did ask the IHSAA to study the measure for consideration two years from now, when the next realignment cycle comes around.

Changes to the out-of-season limited contact rule were approved that will allow three sessions per week for two hours per session in team and individual sports.
