Man arrested in murder

Details about what led police to a man arrested in the murder of a Center Grove area resident are expected to be released today.

Police arrested Joseph Evan Avart, 37, Plainfield, late last week on a charge of murder in the death of Andrew Perry.

Perry, 50, was found dead in his home in Stone Village, located off Stones Crossing Road, on Dec. 2. Perry’s mother came to the home on Cadogan Drive that morning after a local dog grooming business called her and said her son had missed an 8:30 a.m. appointment, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

She went to the home to pick up the dog and found her son on the floor in a pool of blood. She had tried to perform CPR and called 911 for help, the report said.

An autopsy later showed he died of blunt force trauma to the head and the death was a homicide.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate. A news conference is scheduled for today to release more information on Avart’s arrest, according to a news release from the weekend.

Investigators had said that Perry’s mother found the garage door open and an interior door ajar when she arrived that morning. A neighbor told police she had seen the garage door open shortly before 7 a.m., the report said.

Police found blood on the wall, and Perry was laying on the kitchen floor when they arrived, the report said. Perry’s teenage son was not home the night before and had stayed with relatives, police had said.

Police had said they believed Perry was targeted and that the killing was not a random act.
