Some consolation: Cubs down Braves

Senior Allison Barnard scored 10 of her team-high 18 points in the second half Friday night to lead the Franklin girls basketball team to a 53-35 victory against Indian Creek in the consolation game of the Walt Raines Classic at Franklin.

The Braves (6-10) controlled the game’s tempo early on, but the Grizzly Cubs used an 8-0 run in the opening minutes of the second quarter while capitalizing on Indian Creek turnovers to erase a four-point deficit.

Franklin (9-7) never trailed again.

“Our defensive pressure gives people problems. It’s especially effective because we have several girls we can rotate in and out,” Franklin coach Josh Sabol said.

“We haven’t been able to use our press much lately. It was nice to be able to get back to being us again.”

Junior Sarah Sullivan added nine points for the Grizzly Cubs, while senior Delanie Hill chipped in eight.

“Sarah is a very special player,” Sabol said. “I think she’s probably the most underrated player in this area.

“She was the difference in this game compared to the one we played earlier today.”

The Grizzly Cubs lost to Batesville, 43-37, in the tournament’s opening game; the Braves were defeated by Brownsburg, 60-48.

Junior Addie Rund scored 12 of her 17 points for the Braves from the free-throw line. Sophomore Katie Burkman added 10 points.

Overall, the Grizzly Cubs hit 20 of their 45 field-goal attempts, while the Braves made only seven of 29 from the field.

Franklin hosts Bloomington South at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Indian Creek will face visiting Edinburgh at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
