Scam targets Edinburgh utility customers

Edinburgh town officials are putting out a warning about scammers that have been calling residents threatening to have their utilities disconnected if they don’t make an immediate payment.

Edinburgh residents have received phone calls requesting money to prevent utilities from being shut off. The residents are asked to wire the money to the caller.

Residents who receive these calls should not provide any information to the caller, and instead should contact the Edinburgh Police Department and check with the town’s utility office during normal business hours, according to a notice on the town’s website.

The police department has received one report of the attempted scam as of Wednesday morning, but no money was sent, Edinburgh Police Chief David Mann said.

“Most people recognize this as nonsense,” he said. “It could be happening from anywhere in the country or the planet.”
