If the future is now for the Edinburgh girls basketball team, then the Lancers are in great hands.
On Monday night at South Decatur, it was a sophomore and a freshman that led the charge in the Lancers’ victory against the host Cougars.
Sophomore Destiney Ramey nailed five 3-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 25 points. She had a lot of help from freshman teammate Trinity Tatlock, who chipped in 15 points of her own. Those two carried the bulk of the load in the Lancers’ 59-46 Mid-Hoosier Conference win.
Although Edinburgh (9-10, 2-1) got off to a hot start and led by six at the end of the first quarter, the Cougars (3-14, 0-4) charged their way back in a big way in the second. Using some timely scoring and a stingy defense that allowed the Lancers to score only six points in the quarter, South Decatur headed to the locker room with a 26-22 lead. The Cougars outscored Edinburgh by a total of 10 points in the period.
The second half was a very different story, however. Ramey came out of the locker room locked in, and her teammates made sure to find her. She nailed four shots from behind the arc, scoring 12 points in the quarter.
South Decatur had managed to score the first six points of the third quarter, stretching its lead to 10 just two minutes into the second half. But following a timeout by Edinburgh, Ramey hit back-to-back 3s, and Tatlock hit a floater in the paint, stole the ball from the Cougars and turned it into a three-point play.
In the span of three minutes, South Decatur’s 10-point lead had shrunk to 35-33. Following a layup by the Cougars’ Sierra Lang that gave South Decatur a four-point lead, Ramey was up to her old tricks again, nailing two more shots from long range to give the Lancers a three-point lead heading into the final period.
It was a lead they did not relinquish. South Decatur tried to speed up the tempo of the game by showing Edinburgh a full-court press, but the Lancers had little difficulty breaking it. They continually got behind the defense for easy layups.
By the final three minutes, Edinburgh had essentially put the game away on its way to a comfortable victory and a bright future.
