Alternative academies give students another option

From losing a parent to needing to work to pay bills, dozens of local students have found another option that allows them to graduate high school.

Both the Center Grove Alternative Academy and Clark Pleasant Academy offer online courses and one-on-one assistance from teachers. For students, the academies provide more flexibility for students needing to work to support themselves, catch up on courses they hadn’t completed or attend job-orientated courses at Central Nine Career Center.

At Center Grove Alternative Academy, about 25 students will be graduating this spring. Clark Pleasant Academy will have about 50 students receiving their high school diplomas.

“It is exciting to see how they have grown since last fall,” said Lesleigh Groce, the director of the Clark Pleasant Academy.

One of the most important lessons she works to instill in her students is the ability to take responsibility for their own education and future, Groce said.

Seeing her students succeed is one of the joys of her job, she said.
