Potent duo fuels Grizzly Cubs in sprints, jumps

As a freshman, Franklin sprinter and long jumper Cami Kelsay can be susceptible to moments of worry or self-doubt during track meets.

Senior Kloie Doublin knows exactly what that’s like.

"I see a lot of my younger freshman self in her, if that makes sense," Doublin said. "I had the really inconsistent, jittery all the time, worried about hitting the board in the long jump kind of thing, all the way up until this year. So just that confidence and relaxing is what I want to give to her."

The inner calm, as Doublin knows, comes with time and experience. Pure talent, though, is something that Kelsay already possesses plenty of, and she’s been putting it to good use for the Grizzly Cubs this spring.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]

Kelsay and Doublin have given Franklin a potent 1-2 punch in the 100-meter dash and the long jump — they’re two of the team’s top three point scorers — and both are hoping to put forth big peformances this evening when the Grizzly Cubs host the sectional meet.

Doublin had already established herself as a standout, earning All-County honors last year and qualifying for regionals in the 100. She’s performing at a high level again, with bests of 12.57 seconds in the 100 and 17 feet, 5 inches in the long jump.

Kelsay isn’t far behind. The rookie has excelled in both the 100 (12.73) and 200 (26.28) as well as the long jump (16-9), giving the Grizzly Cubs a pair of potential regional qualifiers.

Having such a competitive situation between teammates can sometimes be a disaster, but Franklin coach Ray Lane says that the pair has meshed seamlessly.

"They’re both really competitive and they want to succeed; they want to have that top spot," Lane said. "But it’s a positive environment where they’re challenging each other and pushing each other to be better.

"Personality-wise, they’re really pretty similar. I think that’s why it’s so easy to get along, because they can relate to each other as well. Cami is Kloie four years ago, and we hope that if we just keep staying on pace that Cami will be able to go and have similar success to what Kloie has."

As was the case last year, Doublin has been trying to balance getting ready for the postseason with training for next month’s International Powerlifting Federation World Championships, where she set four world records while winning her division with ease.

She says that preparing for both simultaneously caused her a lot of stress last year, but the second time around has been much smoother — the inner calm that comes with experience.

"Having that figured out and knowing it’s all going to work out, and just that extra confidence in my training because I’ve already been through it," Doublin said. "Just being reassured that everything will be okay has been the best thing this season."

Kelsay is hopeful that she’ll develop that herself in the coming years.

"Kloie has a lot of self-confidence, and that’s something that I lack a little bit," she said. "If I have a bad jump then I’ll get down on myself a little bit, but she’s always positive, and so I try to stay positive too."

Both have plenty of reason to be positive heading into today’s meet — their events are loaded with high-level competitors, including Center Grove’s Haley Goines, Julia Riley and Kiyah Yeast as well as Hanna Anderson of Greenwood, but Doublin and Kelsay figure to be right there in the mix.

"That’s a reality that they know," Lane said of the loaded lineup, "but with their competitiveness, they embrace that challenge."
[sc:pullout-title pullout-title="If you go" ][sc:pullout-text-begin]

Franklin Sectional
