Greenwood Christian Academy: Hannah Jones

Using her own unique studying method, a Greenwood Christian Academy student was able to hone her talents and ace her toughest class.

During her freshman, Hannah Jones took one of the hardest classes she’d have to face in high school — biology. She had enjoyed drawing as far back as she can remember, so Jones figured out a way to incorporate those skills into studying the scientific terminology she’d need to recall for tests and quizzes.

She made flashcards and would include drawings to help spark her memory of different words, a strategy that helped her earn an A in the class.

“When I sit down to draw, I always try to think of a central idea that I’m trying to convey when I start,” she said.

After finishing her freshman year with a perfect GPA, and earning As in challenging courses such as biology, Jones realized that finishing near the top of her class was a possibility. Jones is graduating as one of two salutatorians at Greenwood Christian Academy. She has been accepted into the University of Indianapolis, where she plans to study graphic design.

A class in eighth grade first sparked her curiosity about graphic design.

Jones took graphic design as an elective course and immediately knew this was what she wanted to do as her career. She had always enjoyed art, but this was the first time she had seen how her artistic talent could be used for a career. Jones liked the course enough that she took it again two years later as a sophomore.

She used her skills with graphic design to work for the school newspaper and yearbook. She also did an internship with the school, where she worked on marketing events, and that helped solidify her career choice, Jones said.

The social aspect of marketing is what Jones found to be appealing.

“I loved the idea of connecting people to what is happening in their community,” she said.

Jones visited several schools on her search to find the right college. But she knew the University of Indianapolis was the right fit for her after getting to attend a graphic design class.

The professor was showing students how to make GIFs — files that contain short, animated images. Jones caught on right away and is looking forward to all of the things she’ll be learning in the next four years, she said.
