Woman fires gun to scare husband during dispute

A Franklin woman was arrested after she told police she fired a gun in her home to scare her husband, knowing the shot wouldn’t hit him, because she was angry, police said.

Shannon L. Young, 44, 3275 Westpointe Drive, was arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm after the incident on Saturday night.

Young and her husband both had minor injuries from the physical dispute that followed the gun being fired. No one was hit by the shot.

Young’s husband, Ted, called 911 for help at 10:22 p.m. He told police that his wife had been drinking heavily, could not find her identification and debit card and kept accusing him of keeping the items from her, a Franklin police report said.

She threw a cup at him, and he threw it at the wall. While he was cleaning up broken glass, his wife came back into the room and pointed a gun at him, again demanding the cards. When he told her again that he didn’t have them, she fired the gun with the shot going to the right of him, the police report said.

He struggled with his wife to get the gun away from her, and police arrived.

Shannon Young told police that she was an excellent marksman and knew the shot would not hit her husband, and knew it wouldn’t penetrate the wall and strike a neighboring home, the report said. Police said she appeared to be heavily intoxicated, and a test showed she had a .266 percent blood-alcohol content, the report said.

She was taken to the hospital to be treated for alcohol consumption and some injuries to her arms. Ted Young declined medical treatment for a cut to his arm.

Shannon Young was booked into the Johnson County jail and held on $4,500 bond.
