Man impersonated officer in traffic stop

Investigators are looking for a man they suspect was impersonating a police officer when he stopped a vehicle in southern Johnson County.

Just after 8:30 a.m. Friday, a woman was stopped in her vehicle by what looked like a police officer on Nineveh Road, just south of State Road 252.

But when the man got out of his vehicle, the woman noticed he didn’t look like a typical police officer.

The man was wearing a faded uniform and she couldn’t read the patches on his arms, his badge only said “sheriff” and his duty belt was mostly bare, except for a gun that didn’t look real, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

When the man walked up to her vehicle, he didn’t introduce himself and only asked her if she knew what she had done wrong, the report said.

The woman refused to give the man her identification and he ordered her to get out of her vehicle. She knew something was not right and she rolled up her window and drove away, according to the report.

When she looked behind her, she saw the vehicle follow her until the next driveway, where it turned around and drove away, the report said.

Sheriff Doug Cox said his office has not received any other similar reports from any other drivers.

The woman told deputies she was hoping another vehicle would come along so she could flag them down for help, and decided to drive away hoping to at least get to a more public area, the report said.

The vehicle is described as a white sport-utility vehicle with a black grill and a light bar, and the woman thought she saw black spray paint on the hood, the report said. The man is described as about 5-foot-7 and 250 pounds, the report said.
