Trojans earn medals at boys state track meet

Matt Fleener improved his seed and his time, but the Center Grove senior wasn’t entirely pleased with his performance in the 400 meters at the state boys track and field meet on Saturday.

Fleener finished sixth in 48.92 seconds. But his goal was to claim the title.

“To be honest, no, I’m not happy,” Fleener said. “I came here to win. I wanted to get down in the high 47s, but that didn’t happen. I was feeling weak beforehand.”
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

Fleener came back a little more than an hour later to join juniors Sam Hohlt and Gavin Matheson and senior Steven Mills for a seventh-place finish in the 4×400 relay in 3:19.76. Hohlt also placed ninth in the 300 hurdles in 39.02 to earn a medal.

Those efforts allowed the Trojans to tie for 28th overall as a team with eight points. Their 4×100 relay team was disqualified for running out of their lane.

Fleener wasn’t the only Johnson County athlete disappointed with their performance on Saturday. Greenwood senior Nick Young went in looking to medal in both the shot put and discus, but finished 14th in the discus (156 feet, 8 inches) and 18th in the shot (52-0 3/4).

“I’m definitely disappointed,” Young said. “I thought I was going to do a lot better. I thought I had a good shot at placing in both. With my PRs, I would have placed highly in both, but I didn’t do it today. It’s not the way I wanted to end my last track meet, but I have four more years, maybe five in college.”

Also for the Woodmen, Ethan Pine finished 13th in the 1,600 (4:19.10), Nick Patton took 16th in the preliminaries of the 110 hurdles (14.98) and Lex Logan was 22nd in the 400 (50.51).

Meanwhile, Franklin came away with a pair of 20th-place finishes. Junior Matt Frazier took 20th in the pole vault (12-6), and senior Nick Riggles was 20th in the 300 hurdles (40.11). Junior Andrew Bixler finished 26th in the 3,200 (10:15.42).

Whiteland senior David Ryan, sophomore Dalton Spangler, junior Mika Long and senior Bailey McMahon finished 20th in the 4×800 relay in 8:03.47. Freshman Will Jefferson was 24th in the 3,200 (10:11.44).
