Two men arrested after string of incidents

Two men were arrested after a string of incidents in the Center Grove area on Sunday morning, including vehicle break-ins, a chase with police and residents reporting a man forced his way into their apartment.

About an hour after the first report, police had arrested Rafiqa Sibley, 20, of Saint Anne, Illinois, and Jarvis Brown, 19, of Yazoo City, Missouri, on multiple charges, including two counts of theft, possession of marijuana and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle.

The incidents began around 8:30 a.m. Sunday at a grocery store near State Road 135 and Smokey Row Road. Two shoppers returning to their vehicle in the parking lot found Sibley and Brown in their vehicle. Another shopper who was nearby in his vehicle got out and drew his gun because he saw something in one man’s hand, according to the Greenwood Police Department report.

Sibley and Brown drove away, and the man followed them north on State Road 135 to the parking lot of Emmanuel Church, where he lost site of their vehicle, the report said.

Shortly after, police received a call from someone at Emmanuel Church around 9:30 a.m. who reported a man was trying to get into vehicles in the parking lot. An officer was attending the church service, and went outside and tried to confront Sibley, who ran, the report said.

After a half-mile chase in the nearby Copper Chase at Stones Crossing Apartments, police caught up to Sibley, who refused to stop. An officer used a Taser, and Sibley was arrested, the report said.

While police were arresting Sibley, a resident of an apartment on Bauxite Lane told officers Sibley had knocked on their door and when they opened the door, he walked inside.

The resident said that Sibley told them that he needed help because his friend was in trouble. The resident told Sibley to leave and used the door to push him back outside, the report said. Sibley told police that he had knocked on the door and spoken with the person who answered it, the report said.

Officers found Brown at a gas station at the intersection of Stones Crossing Road and State Road 135 and arrested him, the report said. Brown denied being anywhere near the church, the report said.

When searching the vehicle Brown and Sibley had been driving, police found two bags of marijuana and a Center Grove football backpack with a laptop inside. The owner of the laptop told police the bag had been in his vehicle while he attended services at Emmanuel Church, the report said.

Sibley, 473 W. Station St., was also arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement and residential entry. He was held at the Johnson County jail on $9,200 bond.

Brown, 606 Shoreline Drive, was also arrested on a charge of providing a false identity statement. He was held at the jail on $16,000 bond.
