Whiteland home damaged by fire

A Whiteland home was damaged by a fire after a man attempted to use a small torch to burn weeds around a house on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 600 block of Walnut Street in Whiteland about 2:40 p.m. for a fire on the side of the house, Whiteland Fire Department Chief Eric Funkhouser said.

A resident had been using a small torch to do weed control around the house. About an hour after the man had moved to working on another side of the house, he returned to see that the siding was on fire, he said.

The man suffered burns to his fingers from trying to rip some of the siding off to get to the fire. He went to the hospital, Funkhouser said.

The damage was limited to one wall of the home, which firefighters had to open to ensure the fire was extinguished, he said.

New Whiteland, Greenwood and Franklin fire departments assisted, Funkhouser said.
